World Region: Asia

Central Asia

Central Asia is at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, serving as an important hub for the movement of people, goods, and ideas throughout history. The vast majority of the 90 million people in the region practice Islam, though people are being reached for Christ in small numbers. While Central Asia’s cities have grown more modern and industrial in recent years, many people groups still practice their nomadic traditions from long ago.

Middle East

Civilizations of the Middle East date back to ancient times, and the region has been a major center of world affairs throughout history. It is home to numerous long-established ethnic groups and languages – Arabic being the most common. The Middle East is a strategically, economically, politically, culturally, and religiously significant region, home to some of the peoples least reached by the hope of the gospel.

Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia, divided into mainland and maritime regions, is extremely diverse. The area has long played a key role in history as an important maritime trading hub and gateway to the rest of Asia. Democratic forms of government are now taking root as many countries gain national autonomy, which is opening the doors for the gospel to be shared throughout the region.

Japan

Japan is a culturally and technologically advanced nation that appears to be upwardly evolving, but remains a land of spiritual darkness. The hopelessness of the polytheistic religion of Shinto and the non-theistic philosophies of Buddhism have consistently resisted the light of the Gospel. It has instead created an atmosphere of despair evidenced by one of the highest suicide rates in the developed world, an alarming level of teen sexual activity, and an epidemic of social withdrawal syndrome. TEAM is preaching the Gospel alongside our Japanese brothers and sisters in Christ to build up the church.

Southeast Asia

In recent years, Myanmar has made significant political and economic changes, enabling the country to reengage with the global community. These new open doors provide opportunities for work in the areas of business, health care, and education. While there are many Christians amongst the ethnic tribal peoples (some who trace their Christian heritage back to Adoniram and Ann Judson, who first brought the gospel to Burma in 1813), the majority Bhama people are staunchly Buddhist.

Nepal

Nepal is a land of rugged mountains, immense poverty and warm people. The last two decades of failed democracy, civil war and the collapse of the monarchy have left many Nepalese without hope. Yet the gospel which only penetrated 60 years ago, has resulted in one of the fastest growing churches in the world. Still many challenges exist in health, education as well as people groups who have yet to hear.

Pakistan

Pakistan is home to over 30 languages and some 400 people groups. TEAM has ministered to many of these groups for 70 uninterrupted years, through dedicated service in healthcare and education. Our goal has always been to bless the neediest people, whatever their race, color, or faith, in the communities where we work, while partnering with the local church.

Papua

Papau is the easternmost province of Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world. Indonesia is the most populous Muslim-majority nation. The country has experienced the world’s largest planned resettlement program. The government’s transmigration scheme moved more than eight million people from densely populated areas to new settlements on less populated islands. TEAM is pursuing opportunities to share the gospel with migrants in multi-cultural urban centers.

Philippines

TEAM is working to ignite church planting movements among the least-reached peoples of Asia and beyond, fueled by equipped Filipinos and Asians.

Taiwan

Taiwan is home to people straddling ancient Chinese traditions and hi-tech globalization. The combination of a hi-tech materialistic culture with the entrenched traditional religions of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism is a barrier to spreading the Gospel. Christianity is well known for its service to society and active care for people in need, but there is a shortage of pastors and Christian leaders and workers. Additionally, the church in Taiwan has had very little penetration into rural areas and among the working class and poor people. TEAM is working with the Taiwanese church through planting of daughter churches, camping and youth ministries, mentoring and leadership development, urban poor ministries, and Bible study training and development.

Thailand

Thailand, the "land of the free," is inhabited by a majority Buddhist population. There are pockets of Animistic, Muslim, and Christian minority groups, but only 0.05 percent of the 68 million people are Evangelicals. Buddhism influences all aspects of social and civic life. Becoming and living as a Christian feels counter-cultural for Thai people, and this fact inhibits church growth. TEAM's strategy is a holistic approach to church growth by enabling Christians to have a positive influence on their community and by equipping new Thai believers to do the work of the ministry as lay leaders.
